Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas 2019

Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas 2019

All of the Christmas things, Blog
This year my Christmas wish came true when I was selected to take part in Kirstie Allsopp’s Channel 4 series ‘Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas Competition’.   As a keen crafter, and a massive fan of Christmas, I have long been a fan of the show (and Kirstie’s other crafting programmes – Handmade Home, Vintage Home, Fill Your House for Free, Celebrity Craft Masters), and have always thought how amazing it would be to craft at Christmas HQ. But until last summer I had never even considered that it might actually happen! I still can’t quite believe it happened, the day of the competition was a very surreal day, but more surreal was actually seeing myself on the telly! me on the telly! So how did it all come about? Sometime around…

Why do we say rabbit, rabbit, rabbit on the first of the month?

Why do we say rabbit, rabbit, rabbit on the first of the month?

Blog
Hello August! Did you remember to say “rabbit, rabbit, rabbit” this morning? Many people believe that it’s lucky to start a new month by uttering those words. Other variants include rabbit, rabbit”, “rabbits” or “white rabbits” and must be spoken upon waking on the first day of the month in order to ensure good luck for the rest of the month. According to Wikipedia, the exact origin of the superstition is unknown, though it was recorded in Notes and Queries as being said by children in 1909: "My two daughters are in the habit of saying 'Rabbits!' on the first day of each month. The word must be spoken aloud, and be the first word said in the month. It brings luck for that month. Other children, I find, use the same…

All the fun of the car boot fair

All the fun of the car boot fair

Blog
Since moving to York eight years ago, I’ve discovered the joys of a car boot fair. My favourite, and the one that sparked my carbooting hobby, is the York Racecourse Car Boot Fair. Held at York Racecourse every Saturday between the start of April and end of October (except when there is horse racing), this car boot is an Aladdin’s cave of hidden treasures. Set against an impressive backdrop of the former Terry’s factory and the imposing stands of the racecourse, it’s a great place to rummage through the jumble of items on offer. And with over a hundred stalls, it’s one of the biggest in the area. Buyers and sellers come from all over and there’s a good mix of regular traders and people just looking to turn their…

5 things I love about autumn

5 things I love about autumn

Blog
"Don't you love New York in the fall? If makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address" You've Got Mail I may not be in New York (more’s the pity), but I do love autumn. I love the crisp, chill air, and the changing colours of the leaves — not to mention that the arrival of autumn means that Christmas is around the corner! Here are some of the things I love most about autumn: Autumn leaves: The array of colours as the leaves change and fall, and the satisfaction of hearing the dry leaves crunch under your feet. Candles and fairy lights in the house: I pretty much fill my house with candles…

Why September is my January

Why September is my January

Blog
It’s probably a hangover from school days that, for me, September, rather than January, is the month when I want to make resolutions, start new projects and buy new stationery supplies! As I got my new pencil case and school bag ready for starting a new school year, it felt like a chance to start again and offered the possibility for a new and improved me. So, even now, September has a fresh-start feeling for me. It’s the month where I feel the need to get myself organised; to take stock of how the year has been going, then buy a new notepad and make my to-do lists (both at home and at work) for the next 12 months. To me it just makes more sense to do it now…
